A 50 per cent reduction in fares for the MV Fundy Rose sailing between Digby, Nova Scotia, and Saint John, New Brunswick, was big news before coming into effect on Aug. 1.
“This fare reduction is a game-changer for southwest Nova Scotia,” says Dan White, CEO of the West Nova Chamber of Commerce. “We’ve always known the Fundy Rose is a vital link. But making it significantly more affordable opens up a wealth of opportunities,”
Tourism and local businesses will stand to benefit, White says.
“I believe this will be a big drawing card for attracting people to take the ferry instead of driving,” says White.
“The 50 per cent savings will undoubtedly make it more attractive for people to take the ferry, especially when factoring in gas prices and wear-and-tear on vehicles for the alternative driving route. The value proposition is now much more compelling,” he says.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the cost reductions for interprovincial transportation routes in Atlantic Canada and Eastern Québec on July 28.
“Digby is the gateway to Nova Scotia, and the Fundy Rose delivers visitors directly into the heart of our region, positioning them perfectly to explore everything from our rich Acadian heritage to Keji National Park and our stunning coastal landscapes and to Bear River, the coastal village on stilts,” says White.
White says the 50 per cent reduction makes the ferry a much more attractive, cost-effective, and convenient option for exploring Nova Scotia.
“This isn’t just about day-trippers; it encourages longer stays, more overnight visitors, and a greater dispersal of tourists throughout our communities,” he says. “More visitors mean more dollars spent at our local businesses – our charming accommodations, unique shops, incredible restaurants, and vibrant attractions will all see a significant boost. This translates into job creation and a stronger local economy for everyone.”
Beyond tourism, White says the fare reduction makes travel more accessible for business purposes and for residents visiting friends and family.
“It truly strengthens the connection between our provinces,” he says. “Taking a ride on the MV Fundy Rose is an ocean voyage experience. For families, it’s an adventure in itself.”
